7 Bizarre Cases of Stigmata

In 1224, the hands and feet of St. Frances of Assisi, an Italian Catholic friar, deacon, and preacher, were marked in the same manner the body of Jesus was crucified. He found that he bore five marks, two on his palms and two on his feet, where the nails that fixed Christ to the cross were traditionally believed to have been hammered home. The fifth was on his side, where the Bible says Jesus had received a spear thrust from a Roman centurion. This was the first recorded case of stigmata, a supernatural phenomenon in which the wounds of Christ from his passion and death miraculously appear on a person’s body.

Since then, hundreds of people have claimed to have miraculously received stigmata. However, up until now, the Catholic Church hasn’t proven if the strange phenomenon is true.

St. Gemma Galgani

Also known as the Daughter of the Passion, St. Gemma Galgani had her first spiritual experience when she was 16 years old. The signs of the stigmata started to show when she was 21. She claimed that she received messages about future events from her guardian angel, Jesus, the Virgin Mary, and a host of other saints. The wounds caused her health to decline. Reports showed that she was often found in a “state of ecstasy.” Her doctor explained that she had “hysterical behavior” due to neurosis.

Born on June 7, 1943, Teresa Musco grew up extremely devoted to Jesus. She had an abusive father and her family were often left without care because of World War II. Musco had her first vision of the Virgin Mary at age five. She said that the Virgin Mary explained her father meant no harm. According to List Verse, an online site that publishes lists that intrigue and educate, she started to show stigmatic wounds in October 1968. Teresa experienced her full-blown stigmata on Holy Thursday of 1969.

On those days, she took no food or water. This went on for almost 40 years.

Magdalena De La Cruz

Unlike other people who experienced stigmata, Magdalena De La Cruz had suffered from it at such a young age. She even attempted to crucify herself, managing to nail her feet and one hand, at the young age of 10. On Easter Sunday 1497, it was believed that she had been miraculously healed. Aside from that, it was claimed that Magdalena made prophecies, received visions, and even performed miracles, including making the blind see and the lame walk.
