Doctors Have Been Secretly Using Their Own Sperm for Artificial Insemination: Report

In 2017, teenager Eve Wiley from Nacogdoches, Texas discovered that she was conceived through artificial insemination 16 years ago. She decided to ask Margo Williams, her mother, who her father is. Williams then asked her fertility doctor, Kim McMorries, for help, to which he obliged. The result stunned them all – Dr. McMorries was Wiley’s father. However, this was not the only case with the same issue. There are a lot more.

Dr. Jody Madeira, a law professor from Indiana University, is currently following more than 20 similar cases in several states in the US, Europe, and Africa. Some of the states include Connecticut, Vermont, Idaho, Utah, and Nevada. One of the cases involved Indiana fertility specialist Dr. Donald Cline. During the 1970s and '80s, he used his own sperm to impregnate at least 36 women. About 61 people claimed that he was their biological father, with DNA evidence to back them up.

Aside from that, Dr. Norman Barwin from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario inseminated at least 11 women with his own sperm. His license was revoked in 2017. However, cases like this are unlikely to get a harsh sentence due to a lack of laws addressing the issue. But there have been some changes. Texas legislators made it a crime for doctors to use sperm, eggs, or embryos from an unauthorized donor last June. They are now considering this act as sexual assault. At the same time, the doctors who will be proven guilty would have to register as sex offenders.

However, some people are against this. Judith Daar, dean of the Chase College of Law at Northern Kentucky University Judith Daar, stated that classifying the act as sexual assault is “a step too far.” But proponents like Klick say that this is the right thing to do. “There’s a physical aspect to it — there is a medical device that is being used to penetrate these women to deliver the genetic material. I equate it with rape, because there’s no consent. It’s creepy. It violates so many different boundaries on a professional level,” she said.
