Three People Arrested After They ‘Sawed Off’ Dog’s Legs

Last February, Buddy, a two-year-old dachshund, was shot in his legs, paralyzing him. He was then unable to walk. Buddy also suffered from sores all over his legs from dragging his limbs around. His owners failed to get him much-needed medical care.

All That’s Interesting, a site for curious people who want to know more about what they see on the news or read in history books, reported that Buddy was found abandoned in a Slidell, Louisiana trailer park, with his hind legs “sawed off.” His owners – a 50-year-old woman and her 17-year-old daughter – claimed that Buddy’s legs ‘fell off’ after they bandaged them too tight. However, a veterinary expert working with the investigators confirmed that the dog’s loss of limbs was ‘maliciously inflicted’.

Now, the two owners together with the daughter’s 17-year-old friend – who confessed to abandoning Buddy in the trailer park – have been arrested. They were charged with animal cruelty and aggravated animal cruelty. It was reported that the daughter was booked into a juvenile detention center, the mother was released on a summons, and the third suspect was released as well.

In an interview, Sheriff Randy Smith said he was deeply upset about what happened. “As a dog owner myself, I was completely appalled when we received a complaint of such horrific animal cruelty in our community. Our investigators acted swiftly, and the parties responsible have been charged accordingly,” he said.

It was also found out that Buddy had two bullets in his back. Fortunately, Buddy is now being taken care of by the animal rescue organization Dante’s Hope. A Facebook fundraiser was initiated to secure the dog’s recovery, accumulating more than $20,000 in eight days, with an initial goal of $4,000. The post described Buddy’s suffering as “unthinkable."

“Due to blood loss, he had to have a blood [transfusion] today in order to survive. His wounds were cleaned, he had an IV and urinary catheter placed and is now on IV antibiotics and pain meds until his values come up enough to survive the surgery,” the post explained.
