Dad Transforms Toolbox Into a Cool Nappy Changing Station

44-year-old David Pike flexed his creative muscles when he was instructed to pick up baby furniture, writes Ellen Scott of the UK’s highest-circulating newspaper Metro. The mechanic and father of four from Detroit, Michigan, United States, went to Home Depot to purchase a £160 ($197) Husky Tool Cart and transform it into a nappy changing station.

David installed a metal side shelf, wire baskets for storing nappies and other essentials, and a foam pipe insulation “around the top’s metal lip.” The latter prevents his twins from getting scratched by the cart while being changed. He also added built-in LED lights to help him change his twin children’s diapers at night. Once they are old enough, the changing station will be converted as a tool trolley for MotorCity Mechanic, Dave’s workplace.

According to Cafe Mom, a social networking site dedicated to moms and moms-to-be, David states that his wife was not initially keen on his idea, but David’s creativity “won her over." He justifies, “Why a tool cart? My day job for the last 25 years has been a mechanic. My other job is being an automotive Youtuber making videos about the cars I worked on all day.” Fortunately, David’s wife understood and accommodated him and his automotive lifestyle.

David used a tool cart for his DIY project, as any baby-specific furniture he bought would be sold online once it’s used to earn back some money. He chose something he knew he could use once his twins grew up. For Dave, the end result is “the most practical diaper changing table you can find.”

He shares that the tool cart’s new calling will be used to make more videos and repair more cars. Over the last few weeks, his wife’s opinion about his “crazy idea” has changed. Dave emphasizes, “She sees what I see, and she gets it. I can’t help but think that she had a plan as well. ‘Let him find something that he thinks is the greatest thing ever and that way he will be more than happy to change diapers!’”
