Pit Bull Dies From Venomous Bites After Protecting Owner's Kids

Pit bulls have garnered a bad reputation for being aggressive and having unreliable behavior in the past. But nine-month-old Zeus is different from the rest of them – sacrificing his life to save the people he loved.

On September 23, Oriley and Orion Richardson from Sumter County, Florida were cleaning the puppy’s water dish outside of their house when Zeus noticed a deadly coral snake. He immediately pinned it to the ground and kept it from harming the children. He then bit off and swallowed its head. However, the pit bull was bitten by the snake four times. The family immediately rushed Zeus to the veterinarian’s office. Although he had received anti-venom, the puppy grew weaker over the next 24 hours. The next day, Zeus died.

Gina expressed how grateful her family was for the puppy’s sacrifice. She said that they will all remember him in their hearts. According to All That’s Interesting, a site for curious people who want to know more about what they see on the news or read in history books, Sega, Zeus’ mother, was brought to the hospital to say goodbye. “Sega goes over to Zeus’ head and puts her paws up on the table and takes a sniff. Her ears came back, she got down, she instantly jumped on the sofa next to me and put her head on my thigh in sorrow. At that moment, not only was my family broken, but his own mother was broken,” Gina said.

Oriley also expressed how much they will miss Zeus. “I played with him all the time. I feel sad and I miss him,” he said. Gina hopes that this story will eradicate the stigma against pit bulls. “If you find [a pit bull] that’s aggressive, most likely, it’s because they weren’t treated right,” she said.

“If you treat them right, they would give their life for you and I owe my son’s life to him,” Gina added.
