Piglet the Pink Puppy Inspires Kids to Deal With Differences

Piglet the pink puppy is the epitome of kindness, acceptance, and inclusion despite being born deaf and blind in a home with his owner Melissa Shapiro and 37 other puppies, reports Greta Bjornson of celebrity and human interest news platform People.

Piglet is a dachshund-Chihuahua mix who was rescued and sent to a shelter before being adopted by Shapiro, who is also a veterinarian. Shapiro never intended to be a full-time mom to Piglet, but after two months, she couldn’t imagine the puppy living anywhere else. She tells People, “It was quite a decision to make. He is a lot of work and he is like a full-time job, taking care of a little disabled baby.” Shapiro couldn’t give him away because he was too cute.

It was not easy for Piglet to get along with his new family. Shapiro recounts, “He was so anxious, he was screaming constantly. He would play, then go to sleep, but when he wasn’t doing either of those, he was screaming.” She couldn’t leave the house for too long. Since then, Piglet has overcome his anxiety to play with his other siblings and become a celebrity, amassing more than 100,000 followers on Instagram.

His story made it to a  third-grade classroom in Massachusetts, where a teacher used Piglet as a model for fostering a positive growth mindset, discouraging students from giving up, and promoting struggles as an avenue of growth. The teacher called it “Piglet Mindset,” according to Shapiro. The veterinarian now has an official Piglet Mindset Outreach program to teach children how to overcome challenges, “work with what they have,” and “not worry what they don’t have.”

People are afraid to adopt animals with disabilities, as they think that taking care of them involves a lot of work, Shapiro notes. “But people see Piglet’s page and I get so many notes from people that because of him, they just adopted,” she adds. She’s happy that individuals are “taking the lead” and “being inspired” by Piglet.
