'Legally Haunted' Mansion on Sale for $1.9M

A "legally haunted" house is back on the market after nearly 30 years after the New York Supreme Court made the ruling.

The house, which is priced at $1.9 million, is locally known as the "Ghost House" and is featured in a famous case known as the "Ghostbusters ruling." It was once owned by a woman known as Helen Ackley, who lived in the house from the 1960s up to the 1980s.

Ackley claimed her family made regular interactions with ghosts, instances that include the spirits waking up her daughter each morning by shaking her bed. She went on to sell the house in the late '80s but faced charges after the buyer, Jeffrey Stambovsky, said Ackley did not inform him of the supposed paranormal hauntings.

The woman's stories about the house led to the stigma around the property, which Stambovsky used in court to win the case and allowed him to cancel the contract. It was the same case that officially dubbed the house as haunted under the law, PEOPLE Magazine reports.

The Queen Anne Victorian home is found at 1 LaVeta Place on the Hudson Riverfront. It has 4,628 square feet of living space and has five bedrooms and five bathrooms, adorned with stained glass windows, arched doorways, a three-car garage, sunroom, and a saltwater pool overlooking the river.

Although it is riddled with terrifying stories, associate broker Nancy Blake Weber said none of the three previous owners reported any paranormal sightings. She added that most Nyackers—including herself—find it "amusing" that the house is legally haunted.

"If there’s anything I’ve felt, it is the warmth and creative spirit that exists in this beautiful home. I’ve never experienced anything that would lead me to feel it’s haunted."
She said, "This is the third time I have had the opportunity to list and sell this home, so I’ve logged a lot of time here."
