China is Killing and Harvesting Organs of Religious and Ethnic Minorities: Report

China is known for its human rights violations, particularly with harvesting organs from its people. However, it has repeatedly denied accusations of this, insisting that they stopped harvesting organs from executed prisoners in 2015. Thus, the International Coalition to End Transplant Abuse in China (ETAC) created the China Tribunal, an independent panel to investigate repeated allegations of forced organ harvesting by the Chinese government.

All That’s Interesting, a site for curious people who want to know more about what they see on the news or read in history books, used evidence from human rights investigators, medical experts, and others. They concluded that the practice of forced organ transplant by the Chinese government, which may have begun in the 1970s, likely continues until today.

The final report of the China Tribunal stated that minority groups were “killed to order… cut open while still alive for their kidneys, livers, hearts, lungs, cornea, and skin to be removed and turned into commodities for sale.” According to information investigators obtained from hospitals in China, the biggest source for organ transplants came from Falun Gong followers. Also known as Falun Dafa, Falun Gong is a spiritual practice that was banned from China 20 years ago. Aside from that, China’s forced organ harvesting came from hundreds of thousands of people from different ethnic and religious minorities.

The report showed that one of these minorities was the Uighur Muslim ethnic minority, who are detained in concentration camps for “reeducation.” Hamid Sabi, an international human rights lawyer who acted as counsel to the tribunal, said, “Victim for victim and death for death, cutting out the hearts and other organs from living, blameless, harmless, peaceable people constitutes one of the worst mass atrocities of this century.”

The China Tribunal also found evidence of forced organ harvesting of detainees coming from members of some Christian sectors, Tibetans, and the Uighur Muslim minority. “Organ transplantation to save a life is a scientific and social triumph. But killing the donor is criminal,” Sabi added.
