Pony Used as Dog Bait Suffers From Rotting Wounds

On a Wednesday afternoon, Mikey, a miniature pony, was found tied to a gate near a housing estate in Cork, southwest Ireland. But he was not just standing there and enjoying a peaceful day. Mikey had numerous bites, cuts, bruises, and rope burns around his neck. The discovery was immediately reported to the Cork branch of My Lovely Horse Rescue, an organization which aims to observe horses and donkeys in urban areas being mistreated.

Extra.ie, an online site that publishes the latest news around the world, reported that Mikey was used as dog bait based on his injuries. According to the volunteers at My Lovely Horse Rescue, the pony’s case is one of the worst instances of abuse they have encountered. Kelly Mellerick, a volunteer, said, “The abuse of the little [pony], whom we’ve named Mikey has been taking place over a long period of time. We believe that if he hadn’t have been found by the member of the public when he was he would be dead in a day or two.”

Mikey’s wounds are also starting to rot. He is currently battling to survive through the help of My Lovely Horse Rescue. The incident has been reported to the veterinary officials from the Department of Agriculture. According to Mellerick, Mikey’s wounds have so much infection and he is struggling to breathe. In fact, the vets working to treat him stated that they were forced to sedate the pony to reopen many of his puncture wounds to drain pus away.

Although Mikey is now in the process of recovering, he remains in a critical condition. “He was found abandoned tied to a gate with no microchip so no traceability. We appeal to anyone who knows anything to come forward. The Department of Agriculture is looking to prosecute,” the organization said.
