Darius the Painter: The Rat Who Made Brilliant Paintings Using His Feet

Darius the rat has made wonderful paintings with his feet for his owner Amalie Markota Andersen, an art student, writes Faima Bakar of the UK’s highest-circulating newspaper Metro.  Andersen, from Norway, has amassed a significant following on social media thanks to Darius’s paintings. Darius became an artist when Andersen let him walk around after dipping his feet into a non-toxic watercolor set “until the work ‘looked like something.’”

She took a picture of the artwork, posted it on Tumblr, and went to sleep. The image went viral the following day as soon as Andersen woke up. Some people expressed their interest in buying the paintings. Andersen sold three or four paintings. With the profit she earned, she was able to purchase things that Darius needed.

Although the two of them shared a special bond, sadly, Darius died this year. Andersen tells Metro, “All rats have different personalities” and each and every one is “wonderful in their own ways.” For Andersen, Darius was something special. He was known for his timid and shy nature. While rats have the tendency to explore, Darius was not like that. Rather, he liked to spend time sleeping on the bed and cuddling with Andersen.

She comments, “He was like a little baby, always clinging to me, not very independent.” Life became difficult for Andersen when Darius passed away. “It was extra hard to let him go when the time came,” she laments. Darius made a significant impact on her life, as well as the thousands of people who “feel in love with him and his paintings.”

Although Andersen regrets selling the original painting “a little bit,” it makes her happy that Darius’s paintings “are out there somewhere.” Andersen recounts, “I was so happy people liked him. It is what he deserved! I remember showing my friends and family, it was strange but also very fun.”
