Ditch the Suit and Gown: Couple Get Married in Jeans and T-Shirts

26-year-old Rebecca Maxwell and 30-year-old Glen Maxwell wore jeans, a personalized couple shirt with the words “bride” and “groom,” and trainers for their ceremony and reception, reports Ellen Scott of the U.K.’s highest-circulating newspaper Metro. The couple also purchased custom shirts for the bridal party and requested the guests to wear jeans and shirts.

Rebecca and Glen got engaged in August 2016. They planned to hold a “massive white wedding.” However, the more they planned for their wedding, the more they became cognizant that an ostentatious wedding wasn’t for them. Calculating the costs stressed the couple, causing them to feel unexcited about the big event. Glen told Rebecca one evening, “We could get married in jeans and T-shirts and I’d still love you.”

Hence, the couple decided to have a casual wedding that highlighted their relationship rather than the amount of money they spent. Rebecca and Glen are sharing their story to encourage other people to “ditch the pressures of a big wedding” and focus on their special day. “When we were planning our wedding, we started doing everything to please other people,” Rebecca explains. According to Rebecca, inviting guests was becoming more of a duty of not making them upset rather than wanting them to be there.

Rebecca and Glen originally planned to have their wedding at a farm at Christmas time, amounting to £14,000 ($17,326). Instead, the couple said their vows at the Town Hall in Darlington on April 26 along with 40 of their closest family and friends. The ceremony only set them back £250 ($309). As for the reception, the newly-weds took their guests to Center Parcs Whinfell Forest for a £400-dinner ($495).

Rebecca and Glen spent £35 ($43) on their cake, as well as cupcakes. The shirts and jeans cost £150 ($185), £200 ($247) for the flowers, and £70 ($86) for Rebecca’s hair and makeup. Overall, their wedding day totaled to £1,105 ($1,367).

The low-key wedding was perfect for Rebecca and Glen, as they like “simple things,” Rebecca adds, “As long as you marry the person you love, surrounded by people you love, your day will be special.”
