Parents Post Heartbreaking Essays After 8-Year-Old Son Dies in His Sleep

J.R. Storment, a tech mogul, and Jess Brandes, a naturopathic doctor, are mourning the death of one of their 8-year-old twins, Wiley. Wiley, who was previously diagnosed with an extremely mild form of epilepsy called Benign Rolandic Epilepsy, died in his sleep.

Storment recalled the moment he was informed through a phone call by his wife that their beloved son had died. He was sitting in a conference room in his office and the next thing he knew, he was sprinting out of the room with his car keys, running furiously across the street. Meanwhile, Brandes had called 911 and focused on how she would tell Oliver, the other twin, what happened to his brother. In their respective LinkedIns, the couple described the chaotic scene when the emergency services arrived.

According to People, an American weekly magazine for celebrity and human-interest stories, the couple was unable to see Wiley for almost three hours due to the potential crime scene investigation. “They confirmed our son’s death using cardiac leads and slowly returned their equipment back to their truck because even an entire truck of life-saving measures couldn’t be used to save this one,” Brandes wrote.

In their essays, the couple encouraged other parents to prioritize time with their children. They urged others not to miss out on precious time with their children. “Hug your kids. Don’t work too late. A lot of the things you are likely spending your time on you’ll regret once you no longer have the time. If there’s any lesson to take away from this, it’s to remind others (and myself) not to miss out on the things that matter,” Storment wrote.

Brandes wrote that she wished a lot of things were different. But mostly, she wished they had more time. “If you are a parent and have any capacity to spend more time with your kids, do,” she wrote.
