Woman Delivers Baby in a Tub After Hospital Told Them to Go Home

On the night of August 23, LeAnn Bienaime, 27, started to go into labor. She had consistent and “intense contractions.” Together with her husband Leo Bienaime, 29, they rushed to Naval Medical Center Portsmouth only to be sent home. According to People, an American weekly magazine of celebrity and human-interest stories, the couple spent four hours in the hospital when they were told to come back only when LeAnn’s contractions were further along.

LeAnn stated that the hospital couldn’t admit her because she was only 2 centimeters dilated and should come back when she was at 5 centimeters. “I was told that I should come back when my contractions were when you can’t really walk and you can’t really talk through them.” However, her contractions became much more intense when they reached home. She was in the bathroom when she felt her baby’s head coming out. She then headed to the bathtub as they called 911.

However, LeAnn couldn't wait for help to arrive. The mother gave birth to Joachim, her son, in her bathtub. According to ABC News, the news division of the American Broadcasting Company, LeAnn was grateful there were no major complications. However, she is still frustrated that she was sent home. "At first I was angry, and I mean rightfully so, because everyone I would talk to after I told them told me I shouldn't have been told to go home," she said.

The Naval Medical Center Portsmouth released a statement afterward apologizing profusely. They didn’t respond to any request for comment, saying that they can’t comment on the issue without the person's authorization. “Whenever a patient has a question about their care and treatment we welcome the opportunity to discuss this with them in order to fully address their concerns. Due to HIPAA, we cannot discuss anything specific on an individual’s medical treatment without their authorization,” they said.

However, the hospital hopes that LeAnn’s experience would help other new mothers to stand firm despite what a doctor says.
