Couple Accused of Abandoning Adopted 11-Year-Old Claims Girl Was Really a 22-Year-Old Sociopath

In November 2010, Kristine Barnett and her former husband, Michael, adopted an 8-year-old kid girl from Ukraine. They named her Natalia, and she stayed with them in the US for two years. However, the couple had to consult several doctors to determine her age due to lack of birth certificate. She was determined to be 8 or 10 years old. Little did they know that the girl was pretending and deceiving them all this time.

Recently, the couple was accused of neglecting their disabled 11-year-old daughter. According to an article by Crime Time, an online site that features true crime stories from around the world, breaking crime news, and information about Oxygen's original true crime shows and documentaries, warrants of arrest were issued for Kristine and Michael. But they were also released the following day after posting a $5,000 surety bond and $500 cash. However, they revealed that the girl was actually an adult, who deceived them about her age.

The truth was that Natalia was suffering from a form of dwarfism called Spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenital. This bone-growth disorder affects the bones and limits the growth of a person. Kristine also revealed that the adoption was a “scam.” Natalia was a "diagnosed psychopath and sociopath" and "made a career of perpetuating her age facade." According to an article by Newsweek, an American weekly news magazine that provides in-depth analysis, news and opinion about international issues, technology, business, culture and politics, the couple provided a letter from a medical professional stating that she had the teeth and secondary sexual characteristics of an adult, not a child.

According to the letter, Natalia was confined to a psychiatric hospital in 2012 and diagnosed with a sociopathic personality disorder. During that time, she admitted that she was over 18. Thus, the couple appeared in Indiana probate court to change the girl's legal age to 22. The current whereabouts of Natalia are unknown.
