On August 17, Michele Plum, a 36-year-old writer from Horsham, West Sussex, decided to marry herself. The ‘marriage’ is her way to celebrate her birthday. She invited guests, telling them to wear their "best sh*t bridesmaid dresses", own wedding dress, and cheesy suits.

Unilad, a British Internet media company and website owned by LADbible Group, reported that Plum wanted to show that she’s a strong, independent woman. At the same time, she wanted to instill independence in her daughter. “The message behind this is that I’m independent and strong. I’ve tried to teach my daughter that she doesn’t need a partner if she doesn’t want one. With hard work, enjoying life and having good friends and family, you don’t need to be dependent on someone else,” she said.

Plum also could think of no better way to celebrate her birthday than by showing the people around her that she doesn’t need a partner just to be happy. “What’s better than to be surrounded by all my friends and family in a huge polyester gown? And I don’t even have to go home and live with a man for the rest of my life,” she said.

In a video, the ‘bride’ was seen wearing her pale pink dress in the streets together with her "bridesmaids" wearing different colored dresses. According to her, she discovered the ‘Miss Havisham style’ dress at the St. Catherine’s Hospice shop. “I tore one of the bags open and gasped. That was it – it was the one. It’s very pale pink, has all these sequins on and my friend said I look like Ariel from The Little Mermaid when she gets married at the end,” she said.

In Plum’s invitation, she congratulated herself for "making it all this way without marrying anyone." Although her wedding confused her family and relatives, she still made her plans happen and ended up pulling off the wedding of the year.
