Yatin Sangoi, 48, from India, recalled that people used to fart openly 20 to 25 years ago. Eventually, everyone just became sophisticated and the idea of farting became gross. Although medical professionals stated that farting is one of the healthiest human bodily functions, people are mostly ashamed to fart in public. This is why he is organizing a competition which aims for one thing: to fart.
According to LadBible, a social media and entertainment social publisher, the first farting contest in India, which is called ‘What The Fart’, will be held in the city of Surat, in the western state of Gujarat. Sangoi was inspired by a joke. In an interview, he said, "I farted in the middle of watching a movie with my family and one of them laughed, and said that if there was a contest, I would've won. That's when it hit me that while fart contests happen in countries like China, UK and US, and even have a world cup, we don't have anything like it in India."

Above all, Sangoi aims to help in reshaping cultural norms in a way that might benefit public health. "I want to normalize the process of farting," he said. According to 10Daily, an online site that delivers agenda-setting original stories as well as breaks down trending topics, the participants will be given 60 seconds to make the loudest, longest, and most musical bottom burp. The winner will receive about 300 Aussie dollars or RS 15,000 cash.

As of now, more than 50 people have registered for the competition, with almost equal participation from men and women. Sangoi encouraged them to eat plenty of beans, radishes, and boiled potatoes. They will be judged by a stand-up comedian and local doctors. The competition has received mixed reactions from people. Some support it, while others have been left simply stunned.
