Woman Spends 20 Hours a Day Lying Down to Live

Erin Meegan, 34, used to be active before she was diagnosed with several conditions like Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), Craniocervical Instability (CCI), and Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (EDS). Now, she needs to spend her day lying down to prolong her life as sitting up could kill her.

Unilad, a British internet media company and website, reported that this is not the first time Meegan struggled with her health. When she was 24 years old, she was diagnosed with a chronic nerve pain condition called Trigeminal Neuralgia. Fortunately, she managed to recover. She traveled from East Molesey to Perth, Australia, where she met her husband. The couple got married in 2015 and enjoyed a four-month honeymoon. However, her health betrayed her again.

Now, all of Meegan’s conditions are affecting her sight, mobility, memory, speech, heart rate, and neck stability. “With the CCI, that means that my skull is sliding downward on my neck, which causes brain stem compression, and this affects breathing, heart rate, and temperature control. One of my biggest problems is my inability to be upright because as soon as I get up my heart rate increases and all the blood flows in the lower extremities of my body,” she explained.

For the past few weeks, Meegan has been blindfolded because of her terrible blurry vision. She would get fatigued very quickly and there are days when she can’t look at a screen or even speak. She lives in constant agony. “Sometimes, it would be more humane to take me out the back and shoot me,” she said.

But Meegan is not giving up. She and her family have found a neurosurgeon who could help her. However, the neurosurgeon operates out of Barcelona. Thus, she needs to raise £55,000 (US$67,770) by November 1 to get the surgery she needs. “With me being so incapacitated, we have not got the ability to campaign as much as we need to, but we’re trying to raise as much money as we can,” she said.
