Woman Confesses to Not Washing Her Pillows in 10 Years

How often do you wash your pillows? This is a question one mom really wants to know after admitting in a post on Mumsnet, a website for parents, that she hasn’t washed her pillows in 10 years. She received a lot of comments from shocked mothers, debating about the correct answer.

The Daily Mail, a British daily middle-market newspaper published in London in a tabloid format, reported that the unnamed British woman has suffered regular breakouts on her face for the past couple of years. “In the last couple of years, I have been getting spots on my face. I bought new creams, drank more water, washed my pillowcase more often ... but today I realized that I have not washed my pillow once in the 10 plus years since I bought it,” she wrote. She decided to buy new pillows.

Meanwhile, her husband was terrified.

A lot of parents shared their thoughts on the correct number of times to wash pillows. Some argued that they regularly wash their pillow covers and use pillow protectors. Others shared more unusual cleaning methods, including hanging their pillow under the Sun for its “natural bleaching properties.” One also admitted that she is in the same situation. “I’ve never washed a pillow either. We use pillowcases and thick pillow protectors, which both get washed regularly,” she said.

Another parent said that they wash their pillow covers once a year.

People who commented on the post suggested doing the “sniff test” to know if the pillows need to be washed. “The pillows get washed at least every year, or in between if sick gets on them. The key to washing pillows and duvets is packing them tightly into the drum, then they don’t lose their shape,” another said.

Good Housekeeping Magazine stated that pillows should be washed every three to six months. Also, they should be thrown away after two years and new ones bought.
