7 Most Common Nightmares and What They Mean

Have you experienced waking up in a cold sweat and turning on the lights to make sure that what you’ve experienced was just a nightmare? You’re not alone. All of us have probably had nightmares at some point in our lives. Sigmund Freud, the famous neurologist and father of psychoanalysis, argued that all of our dreams symbolize the fulfillment of desire, including our nightmares. That’s why we are left terrified and confused most of the time.

While our dreams or nightmares may seem detailed and distinct, we may be having the same kind of nightmare over and over again. Here are some examples:

Being Chased

Some of us might have experienced being chased by a shadowy figure, monster, generic bad guy, large animal, or other attackers in our nightmares. This can be extremely scary. According to an article by Elite Daily, an American online news platform, Ian Wallace, a psychologist and dream specialist, said that this kind of nightmare has something to do with a goal you are pursuing in real life. It is possible that you are frustrated with your progress toward that goal.

Naked in an Inappropriate Place

Being naked in your nightmare commonly means one thing: you feel vulnerable, exposed, or uncomfortable in your own skin. This can be caused by a feeling of vulnerability in a group you are involved with in real life and being anxious about how someone sees you. This nightmare has also something to do with you deep-seated insecurities.

Late or Unprepared for Something

You are in a frantic hurry because you are already late for a school exam, bus ride, important appointment, or plane flight. The next thing you knew you’ve woken up from the nightmare. According to an article by Ranker, a digital media company located in Los Angeles that features polls on entertainment, brands, sports, and culture, that specific nightmare means that there’s a responsibility that you are avoiding or you are worried about missing an event/opportunity.

Being Trapped

Another usual nightmare is finding yourself in a place that has no exit. You start to feel helpless and afraid after tirelessly searching for a way out. Several authors emphasized that this dream is about feeling trapped within a specific stage in our lives. Also, it can mean that you are feeling too much pressure at work, having trouble making a decision, or you’re in a situation that you don’t feel you can control.

Lost

Sometimes, people dream about being lost in a forest or any place because they are feeling anxious and confused about what their next move in life should be. This nightmare serves as a warning that you are not focused enough to stay on the path and you are distracted in real life. You have probably lost motivation or drive when something you value like the house, car, phone, or even as simple as a key got lost.

Teeth are Falling Out

This is probably the most common nightmare of all. This symbolizes a person losing self-image, money, or youth. It could also mean that you are concerned about how others perceive you. An alternative interpretation has to do with power. Since teeth are the tools you use to eat, losing your teeth in a dream might have to do with some fear of powerlessness.

You Die

Most of us become extremely terrified when we dream about dying. However, it doesn’t mean that you’re really going to die. Dreaming about death means a new beginning in life, which can mean different things to different people. This can involve changing jobs, selling your home, transferring to another place, and others.
