Well-being is having high satisfaction in life, good mental health, and a sense of purpose. It is also about the experience of health, joy, and prosperity. In short, this is when someone simply feels good. 

Everyone wants to have a sense of well-being because it brings about a lot of positivity. You feel happy and satisfied in every aspect of your life. 

 

The World's Well-Being Today

According to Rob Picheta of CNN, the world today is getting more miserable. People all over the world are more fearful, sadder, and angrier than before. This is based on the analysis of global well-being. Anger, sadness, and fear increased in level in 2018 and 2019 too. This is based on Gallup's annual Global State of Emotions report. While there is an increase in those three emotions, there is a slight decline in stress compared to how it was in 2017. But even that being the case, it should be remembered that 2017 was the most miserable decade recorded. 

Based on the various crises across the globe, Chad is the world's most negative country. Niger, Sierra Leone, and Iraq follow. Latin American countries, on the other hand, are on the positive side of the line.

The economy in Chad has been in recession since the fall of oil prices in 2014. Living standards also continue to fall in the country where about 6 million of 15 million citizens are living in extreme poverty. Gallup wrote that "the country's overall score at least partly reflects the violence, displacement, and the collapse of basic services in parts of Chad that have affected thousands of families."

Gallup has been measuring emotions every year since 2006. The countries that are the most negative are Chad, Niger, Sierra Leone, Iraq, Iran, Benin, Liberia, Guinea, Palestinian Territories, and Congo. 

 

Bright Latin America

Paraguay still holds the spot in being the world's happiest and most positive country. But it is in tight competition with Panama, Guatemala, Mexico, El Salvador, and Honduras. Even though these nations have high poverty and violence incidence, they are still positive in life. 

According to Jon Clifton, Gallup's global managing partner, "People in Latin America may not always rate their lives the best...but they laugh, smile, and experience enjoyment like no one else in the world." He added that the high scores reflect their cultural tendency to focus on the good things in life. 

Outside of the Americas, Indonesia is the most positive nation. In the Scandinavian countries, Finland, Denmark, Norway, and Iceland are in front of the United Nations' World Happiness Report.  However, based on Gallup's interview approach, Latin America still has higher levels of feeling fulfilled.

Improving Your Well-Being

If you want to get the most out of life and improve your well-being and quality of life, you have to do more than just eat well and exercise. Ryan Howes, a clinical psychologist, said, that "well-being is associated with balance, understanding, acceptance and constant growth."

Here are some of the things that you can do to develop your well-being. 

-Stretching is de-stressing. This can help enhance your range of movement, improve blood circulation, prevent injury, and increase your flexibility. It can be as simple as bending forward and touching your toes. Spending as little as 5 to 10 minutes daily will do wonders to your body. It can also improve your mood. Stretching can relieve stress and help you feel more relaxed.  Breathe in and breathe out during your stretching sessions to release the tension. 

-Eating more vegetables can improve your psychological well-being. Veggies are good for the body and the brain. Those who have more intake of fruits and vegetables are said to have better mental health. 

-Meditation and mindfulness can improve brain performance, reduce stress, and increase compassion. -Focusing on the present will make you less stressed out as opposed to recalling the past that you cannot do anything about anymore. 

-Resiliency is being able to withstand whatever experience comes your way. You can weather all adversities and bounce back from them because you have the courage to do so. 

-The power of sleep should not be taken for granted. It is essential to health. Lack of sleep is linked to poor health both physically and mentally. So it is always good to get enough rest and sleep. 

-Volunteer work and helping others can boost your well-being. By merely wishing someone well, it can also affect you and put you in a good mood, according to Carolyn Robertson of medicalnewstoday.com. 

A new research in the Journal of Happiness Studies looked more in-depth into other methods of reducing anxiety and increasing one's well-being. The study found out that wishing others well can do magic to your mood. 
If you want to have overall well-being, these five types must all be functioning. These are emotion, physical, social, workplace, and societal well-being.
