Experts believe that emotional intelligence is more important the IQ and is more of an indicator of success, good relationships, and overall satisfaction.

Emotional intelligence is one's ability to manage their emotions positively and understand the emotions of others. EQ, as it is also called, is acquired and built through various experiences that we encounter. People who have high EQ are aware of themselves and how their emotions influence their behavior. This makes them able to manage stress. Uncontrolled emotions can lead to uncontrolled stress. This can lead to various physical problems, such as high blood pressure and a high risk of heart attack. Sometimes, too much stress and inability to manage it can lead to mental health problems.

Four Attributes of Emotional Intelligence

EQ is also being able to understand what other people are experiencing. This tells a lot about how you connect with others. Emotional intelligence is composed of four attributes. These skills make up emotional intelligence and can be learned anytime. However, learning EQ and the application of what you have learned are two different things.

Self-management

You can control your impulses and deal with your emotions in a healthy manner. You can also adapt to changing environments and follow your commitments. To improve your EQ, you must be able to make decisions about your behavior. For example, when you are under a lot of stress, you may lose control and not act appropriately. You must be able to manage stress so that you do not lose control of your emotions during stressful times.

Self-awareness

You know your emotions and how they play a role in how you think, feel, and behave. You are also aware of your strength and weaknesses. Being self-aware means that you are also confident enough.

Your ability to manage the feelings of joy, sadness, fear, and anger will depend on your previous emotional experiences. If you are able to connect to your emotions and understand how they influence you, then you are on your way to improving your emotional intelligence.

In Buddhism, mindfulness is practiced. This is when you are only focused at the present time, without any judgment. Being mindful can help you adjust your thoughts to the appreciation of what is happening right at this very moment. This will make you more self-aware.

Social awareness

Social awareness means that you have empathy. You can understand how other people feel and what their needs are. You are quick to pick up on emotional cues and you also feel comfortable in social functions. You recognize the power of teamwork.

To build social awareness, you must also be mindful. You will not be able to pick up on non-verbal cues if you are not paying attention to what is happening around you. Social awareness means that you have to be present at the moment.

Relationship management

You are able to handle and maintain good relationships. You can communicate clearly and influence others. You are also a good team player. Working well with others starts with emotional awareness and your ability to put yourself in other people's shoes. Once you develop this, you can be better at having a meaningful relationship with others.
