Some people commit infidelity to their life partners because they think it is exciting and seductive. They feel that it gives them the thrill of the ride while they are engaging in a prohibited relationship with other people. It gives the adulterer a new life and a feeling of rejuvenation and joy. On the other hand, the person betrayed, however, feels like all the life has been sucked out of thin air.

All relationships could be very problematic, but dalliance shouldn’t feel insurmountable. Sometimes, people feel that their partner is cheating on them through their partner’s unusual actions such as being overprotective about their phone or laptop and shying away from physical intimacy. Unfortunately, the other person in the relationship has no idea that their partner is cheating on them and experts believe that infidelity and cheating have something to do with the person’s personality traits.

According to an article by Spring UK, they mentioned that narcissism, unstable emotions, and psychopathy. Narcissist people are likely to be looking for gratification from vanity or egotistic admiration of one’s idealized self-image and attributes. Narcissism is a concept in psychoanalytic theory, which was popularly introduced in Sigmund Freud’s essay ‘On Narcissism’. The American Psychiatric Association has listed the classification narcissistic personality disorder in its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders since 1968.

Meanwhile, people who have an unstable emotion could be unreliable, careless, and it will be hard for them to fight off the temptation of cheating with their life partner. Being emotionally unstable can be a sign of a greater issue within a person. Having an unstable emotion could lead to personality disorders such as borderline personality disorder and it can be a sign of childhood trauma, depression or anxiety disorder. A person who is emotionally unstable could show signs of depression and anxiety, while also exhibiting a number of behaviors that can affect both themselves and the people around them.

People who display psychopathic behaviors could also have a huge risk in committing infidelity. Psychopathy is traditionally a personality disorder which is characterized by persistent antisocial behavior, impaired empathy and remorse, and egotistical traits. It is sometimes considered synonymous with sociopathy. Different conceptions of psychopathy have been used throughout history that is only overlapping and may sometimes be contradictory.  Normal people will not easily recognize if their partner is a psychopath since they are extremely charming and they can hide their apathy with their charming smile and friendly personality.

The reasons why people cheat

According to MindBodyGreen, Gallup polls showed that 91% of responders believed that infidelity is morally wrong in a marital relationship while 64% of them say that it will be hard for them to forget what their partner did if ever that they will catch them committing infidelity to them. Moreover, Live Bold and Bloom posted on their website that when a person has a relationship with a narcissistic person, it could be destructive since it could wreak havoc on both parties that are involved and it could destroy the chance of intimacy and the chance to develop the trust of the person.

People with narcissistic personality tend to have an unrealistic sense of authority and they believe that they are better than anyone around them. They also tend to seek for the never-ending need for attention and admiration and because of that, they tend to be less enthusiastic to other people’s need especially when it comes to other’s emotions. People with narcissistic personality disorder believe that they are entitled to have an opinion with everyone in their life.

Meanwhile, when people who are emotionally unstable could affect the different parts of their lives. Being emotionally unstable has a reason and it could stem from the person’s past since it could build them up and affect their present relationship. Furthermore, in order to know if the person is an emotionally unstable individual, they are quick to anger and even the little things could tick them off and they are unable to tolerate the little things which could be a problem since relationships consist of tolerance and understanding.

An emotionally unstable person might also have a hard time trusting anyone but themselves. Having difficulty in trusting someone could cause a problem in a relationship since relationships take trust and acceptance in order for it to work. Moreover, having someone who cannot trust themselves will be hard to be on a relationship with since they cannot be trusted to stand strong on their own moral compass.

Furthermore, people who have a psychopathic personality tend to have a problem in processing their emotions. They tend to display lack or minimal amount of empathy, callousness, manipulation, pathological lying, charm, a tendency toward boredom, arrogance, blame shifting, dominance, aggression, and impulsivity. Having a relationship with a psychopathic person might result in having a dysfunctional relationship cycle because they could devalue and discard their partners if they got bored
