A man from Memphis, Tennessee, committed suicide by setting himself on fire while sharing the video with the world via the Facebook Live streaming service.
Jared McLemore ran into a crowded local bar after pouring kerosene on his body and setting himself on fire. Customers at Murphy's Bar called an ambulance but it arrived too late to save the victim, a local musician. Witnesses say McLemore was on fire from head to foot when he ran into the bar. He died of severe burns at a Memphis hospital.
It is believed that McLemore chose Murphy's Bar because his ex-girlfriend was employed in the bar.
The two had a rocky relationship. Court records show that McLemore had threatened to kill his ex, and in April, he was sentenced to probation after being found guilty of domestic assault.
Audio equipment belonging to McLemore's ex, an audio engineer, was burned up in the fire. Bar patrons, fans, and strangers quickly raised more than $18,000 so she could buy new equipment and pay for trauma therapy.
McLemore's family revealed the dead man's mental illness in a published statement: "Jared was our child, brother, nephew, cousin, and friend and we loved him immensely. He has been struggling with bipolar disorder for 19 years and was in active treatment. Please let him rest in peace."
